![]() ![]() You re-encode because it saves disc space, because it plays better, and because it streams better (all without losing quality). The previous poster is referring to doing something that will not re-encode blu-rays – it is totally unnecessary (if you aren’t going to re-encode you don’t need ANY other software, just rip the largest MT2S file to your hard drive and you’re done – it will contain all the stuff you need including subtitles). It isn’t a very big file, so if you want to send me a private message with your email address I’ll send the zipped version to you. Unfortunately they’ve removed the snapshots – I don’t know why, except they may be close to a final new release. Have you got a direct link, or is it possible for you to make the latest snapshot available at your web server? No snapshots … the main download page i look at is, and searching for it within the HandBrake page just reveals this: which announces “no snapshots”. Even on my 9’ HD projection unit I cannot tell the difference between the original and the encoded movie using the High Profile during A/B tests. Blu-ray encodes are *vastly* oversized, in effect “wasting” large amounts of space. And even with that preset the quality is very very good (not *quite* up to my standard, but I have very high standards:>). Using the standard preset will shrink the movie further – around 20% further. I only have 5.1 now but like you, hope to some day have. Ive done this on a few new 4k UHD discs of mine. Of course ensure you select that same audio track in Makemkv when ripping. A movie that is comparatively “scrubbed” (like animated movies) can be less than 1.5GB per hour. Youll need to select the TrueHD/Atmos audio track and ensure its set to pass through when encoding in handbrake. With x264 especially, if it is forced to too low of a level, it will tag the file as such, but other settings can make it. Also, make sure handbrake is set to 'auto' for the 'Encoder level' (x264 settings) or 'Encoder profile' (x265 settings). A movie with a lot of grain in it (like The African Queen, or Saving Private Ryan) might well clock in at 8-11GB an hour. Re: Processing UHD rips with Handbrake or other software. I use the High Profile strictly, and movies encoded at that rate average around 3.5GB per hour of movie. Just a sidenote question: The resulting MKV file from this 2.5h movie is around 4.8GB in size … it sounds a bit small? It this correct?ĭepending on how it’s encoded that size seems fine. Also I’d recommend VLC for playback (with it you can playback the m2ts files to examine things more closely if you need to). Those blus with episodes (like TV shows) you’ll need to rip each m2ts file separately (you can use BDInfo still to find out what’s what). This will work on everything, I promise (I’ve ripped over 200 blu-rays with zero difficulties, including proper playback on the Live). IN those bases BDInfo will identify the playlist file, which you should load into tsMuxer and remux into a single TS file, which you then use in Handbrake. That’s about it except for those occasions when the largest m2ts file is NOT the movie. Use Handbrake to encode said m2ts file into MKV, using the High Standard preset (except change to MKV container for type and pass through either the AC3 or DTS audio track). Use BDinfo to examine rip to see what is the movie file (usually largest m2ts file in STREAM folder) Rip blu-ray to hard drive with AnyDVD HD. Nothing free works as well and as consistenly and is constantly updated). Let’s recap real quickly here (all software is freeware except for AnyDVD HD, which is HIGHLY recommended. In this video, I demonstrate how to rip a DVD or Blueray to your hardrive using the software Make MKV and Handbrake. I’m going to have to write up my workflow and post it on one of my web sites. Once the beta period ends, only the DVD-ripping will be free.Sigh. The Blu-ray ripping functionality is only free while the software is in beta so grab it while you can. MakeMKV is available now for free while in beta. If space is a concern, or you want to put a copy on your Apple TV, it's possible to use previously-mentioned Handbrake or Video Monkey to transcode into a lower quality (but still excellent) file. While this is useful for those of you with a farm of terabyte-sized drives at your disposal, for others, a lower quality backup is acceptable. Macworld's test resulted in a file nearly 32 GB in size as compared to the original 35 GB on the physical BD. This is currently a bit of a novelty in most Macs being that Steve Jobs considers the whole thing a " bag of hurt." However, if your system meets the hardware requirements, you're ready to go off on your first Blu-ray ripping journey without the typical mess involved. You know that it's possible to backup your CDs with iTunes and your DVDs with Handbrake, but what about that new Blu-ray disc (BD) you just received during the holidays? Macworld has a good write-up of a beta utility called MakeMKV that will rip both DVDs and BDs to perfect quality MKV format.īear in mind that this will require having a connected or internal Blu-ray drive that can read said discs.

Her drive and persistence inspire many women to follow in the path O’Connor so powerfully paved. Her leadership continued as she became the first female Majority Leader for the Arizona State Senate and then the first female Supreme Court Justice. Going against social norms in 1955, she fought to practice law in a male-dominated profession. We discovered through our process that Sandra Day O’Connor was a leader who left a legacy. Being proactive, we got a head start on the bibliography by citing all of the websites we found information in MLA format as soon as we found information. This process helped ensure the reliability of sources. With every new fact we learned, we added them to a list, and this helped us keep track of how many resources restated specific facts. Our research culminated with a private tour of Sandra Day O'Connor's home. We were thrilled to receive a letter in response from Sandra Day O'Connor herself. In fact, visiting the Arizona State Archives gave us an integral understanding of her leadership in Arizona. The smart features are where the Philips Hue Go particularly excels. With a battery life of three hours, we’re not convinced this is particularly portable for long trips away, but it’s lovely to have the option there so long as you remember that you’ll need to charge it up after a few hours of use.Īt around £70, it’s one of the more expensive options for a portable smart light but it works well and comes with all of the Hue functionality we’ve come to love. If you’re looking for a bedside lamp, or you don’t mind the design, this likely won’t be a problem. The Philips Hue Go isn’t the most attractive product in the Hue range, and it doesn’t disappear into your decor like some products in the family. The app also allows you to set up routines for the light so you can schedule it to work like an alarm, slowly getting brighter to wake you up in the morning. Once you’ve found a colour, you can save it as a favourite and in the future you’ll be able to activate it on the smart speaker by saying the name you saved it as. If you’re looking for a very specific shade, you’ll want to use the app. You can either ask your smart speaker for a generic colour, or you can find an exact shade using the colour palette functionality within the app on your phone. The fact that the light can display 30 million colours is difficult to comprehend. It also means you can make it look like someone is living in your home when you’re away to deter burglars. One of our favourite features is the fact that you can turn the light on from the app on your phone, which means you can even put your lights on from the car when you get home on a winter’s night. ![]() Here are some of our favourite smart features: Doing that with your voice is a joy, especially for the first few times you do it. Once you’re set up, you can ask your smart speaker to initiate particular lighting routines, to change the colour of the light in your room, make the light warmer, or turn it off altogether. We’d heartily recommend connecting it to both as it makes the Philips Hue Go a much more accessible and feature-packed product rather than just a singular light that will work on your bedside table when you press the button. Pairing the Go with a Hue Bridge means you can control the light from your Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant or Apple Siri – all of which we've reviewed – sporting smart speaker as well as through an app on your iPhone or Android device. ![]() It’ll turn on from a single press, or you can cycle through a variety of options including dynamic light effects, a warm white colour, and a selection of other shades including blue and green. There’s a button on the rear of the device that I found to be an easy way to control the light. You’re not going to use all of those shades, but it gives you lots of choices when deciding on a colour within the palette included on the app. Like the rest of the Philips Hue range (opens in new tab), you’ve got the choice of 30 million different colours. It’ll last for three hours on maximum brightness, which isn’t particularly impressive when you consider some other lighting options on the market. Meanwhile, Starr also commented briefly about the star-studded CBS TV special that will celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' historic first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Ringo added that he enjoyed poring over the pics while compiling the book because they helped bring back so many memories that he otherwise never would have thought about. "They're in drawers, they're in basements, they're in storage and that we found so much was just incredible." "That I had them was a mind-blower," he noted. Starr told ABC News Radio there was a lot of luck involved in just finding the wide variety of rare images he took throughout his life that are featured in Photograph. Starr then surprised the fans by giving each of them a signed copy of Photograph. They spent time chatting with Ringo and reminiscing about that day in February 1964, before getting their photo taken with the rocker. The opening coincided with two concerts Ringo's All Starr Band had scheduled in Vegas.Īccording to USA Today, the fans got to attend Starr's sound check on Friday and then were reintroduced to the Beatles legend. Arrangements were made to have them meet Starr at the opening of a Las Vegas exhibit celebrating the publication of Photograph. It turned out that five of the six - high-school students from New Jersey who skipped school to see the Beatles that day in 1964 - were still alive. The drummer had expressed interest in discovering the identities of the "kids in the car," as the fans have become known in the press. Who knew now, 2013, it would cause so much interest?" were coming in for the first time in America - most exciting time of my life…and I just took that photo. I had the camera so I just clicked it, you know?" he said. Speaking with ABC News Radio, Starr recalled snapping the picture that's been causing so much media buzz. The pic, which shows six teenagers in a car excited to catching a glimpse of the famous band, is featured in Starr's new limited-edition coffee-table book, Photograph. 22 ( Genesis Publications).Photo: Rob ShanahanOver the weekend, Ringo Starr was reunited with a group of Beatles fans who appeared in a candid photo he took nearly 50 years ago, as the Fab Four were leaving JFK Airport in New York City to begin their first visit to the U.S. It has been published for the first time Starr's limited-edition leather-bound Photograph, released earlier this year as an e-book and out in print Nov. Later, on the Van Wyck Expressway, they encountered the limo ferrying Starr, who shot the photo and saved it for 49 years. 7, 1964, about 4,000 fans and 200 journalists were on hand, including the Fair Lawn teens, who had skipped school. At 14, he joined a band called the Malibus that would grow to a nine-piece ensemble complete with horn section. His family moved to San Francisco in his early teens, by which time he'd begun playing guitar. Jorge Santana was born in Jalisco, Mexico on June 13, 1951. ![]() After releasing a pair of solo albums in the late '70s that focused on funk and disco grooves, Santana maintained a low profile before re-emerging in the '90s collaborating with his brother, sitting in with the band Santana on 1993's Sacred Fire: Live in South America, and collaborating with Carlos Santana for 1994's Santana Brothers. Santana was best known as the leader of the Latin rock band Malo, who scored a Top 20 single in 1972, "Suavecito," from their self-titled debut album, and he would cut four albums with the band from 1972 to 1974. ![]() Of the two I can't really pick and choose which I like better, but, if Santana alone is the criteria, then I'd pick this one, "Sacred Fire" as a pure Santana experience. The younger brother of iconic guitarist Carlos Santana, Jorge Santana was also a talented instrumentalist in his own right, whose style blended blues, Latin, jazz, and rock influences. That one was a cavalcade of musicians of different styles performing their own stuff and some of Santana's well known pieces. I reviewed another Santana DVD that was shot here in the Bay Area. Included in this footage are faces of the people of Mexico. Intercut with the concert are small vignettes of Santana performing in and around Mexico City. His classics are played out in this excellent concert footage, which is actually an amalgamation of two different shows. Santana's in his element here, performing his favorites for people who know him best. Wow, how stupid was I? Looking at this concert I kick myself some, but I can still enjoy the experience via a DVD purchased many years later. A job was tossed my way, but I had to refuse it for a variety of reasons. There was a brief and passing mention of a concert that was going to be filmed in Mexico with Santana. They were talking shop with some of my coworkers who were part of the Bay Area music scene, and who also did some film/video production work. Years back I remember seeing a couple of the musicians in this video in passing at a studio I worked at. I only have one more word to describe it: incendido! Though lacking any "extras" whatsoever, this DVD should more than please most Santana fans. No wonder the Mexican audience, to its great credit, is on its feet and boogying for the entire show I wish my usual Jones Beach concert attendees were as unrestrained! This filmed concert both looks and sounds terrific some nice camera work always helps these affairs. Chester Thompson, a staggeringly awesome keyboardist, is given many opportunities to shine here, and Carlos himself, surely one of the most right-on brothers on the planet, excels on every single tune. The songs here range from sweet and pretty ("Wings of Grace," "Make Somebody Happy," "Esperando") to very hot ("Guajira," "Batuka," "Open Invitation") to jaw-droppingly amazing ("Spirits Dancing in the Flesh," which is a perfect demonstration of that escape-velocity ability, "Black Magic Woman," "Toussaint L'Overture"). Still, the joy on stage is almost palpable. I'd like to say that being back on his home turf seemed to energize Carlos & Co., but the fact of the matter is that this is a typically smoking Santana performance these guys always put out 100% wherever in the world they play. Recorded at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City in May 1993, "Sacred Fire" surely does deliver the goods. I'm happy to report, however, that this concert DVD proved to be an adequate consolation prize. I have seen Santana around 30 times now, in as many years, but this year was disappointed by the band's no-show here in the NYC area. Within minutes of hitting the stage, Carlos and his bandmates are usually percolating at an intensity level that it takes most groups hours to achieve.if ever. No band that I know of achieves "escape velocity" faster than Santana. Speaking of those panels they are now HTML5-based and noticeably faster and more responsive then the previous Flex-based panels.
